Title: – Dividing the Good News from the Bad

Text: – Hell’s Best Kept Secret (by Ray Comfort)

Was anyone saved in the Old Testament by keeping the law?

Are Christians supposed to keep the law today?

This course will examine the relationship between the Law and the Gospel.  Roughly 75% of the Bible is the Old Testament, and much of the Old Testament is Law.  If we fail to distinguish what is law from what is Gospel, we will use the scripture for the wrong purpose.  The Apostle Paul says, “Through the law comes the knowledge of sin.”  But, the law doesn’t have the power to save.  We are told in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

We invite you to this class where we will explore how to divide the good news from the bad; the gospel from the law.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify key passages in the Old Testament where the Gospel is proclaimed
  2. Identify the how the law functioned in relation to Adam, Israel, Christ, and the Church
  3. Identify the different portions of the law
  4. Identify how Saints in the Old Testament were saved and justified
  5. Learn how to rightly apply the law in preaching, evangelism, and discipleship

Students will choose from 3 homework options:

  1. After reading the book “Hell’s Best Kept Secret”, the student will write a 2 page paper about their reaction to the content of the book.
  2. Using the assigned book and course material, student will write a 2-page sermon outline using a text from the law.
  3. Using the assigned book and course material, student will write a 2-page paper on how the 10 commandments apply to Christians today.
