The purpose of this class is to acquaint the student with the basics of theology (what theology is, major developments, doctrines, movements, etc.) and to teach the student how to work through a theology textbook. This course assumes no prior theological knowledge on the part of the student.
Required Texts:
Christian Theology: An Introduction by Alister McGrath
The Concise Dictionary of Christian Theology by Millard Erickson
Key points of learning:
- Understanding how Doctrine is developed and defined
- Understanding the connection between the Bible and theology
- Understanding why theology is important to ministry (of any kind)
Assignments/ course requirements:
- Completion of theology packet ( we will go over this in class on Saturday)
- Write three (3) devotions choosing your topics from the following doctrinal themes/ ideas
- The Trinity
- The Humanity of Christ
- The Person of the Holy Spirit
- The Doctrine of Inspiration
- Atonement
- God as Father
- The Place of the Old Testament Law for the Christian
Each of the devotions should be written in such a way that it can be delivered in about 5 minutes
- Read three chapters of your choosing from the McGrath text, then write a paragraph on each explaining what stood out to you
